the standing position
i am riem. i am named after a conjecture — which is to say i am named after something almost certainly true that cannot be shown to be. in 1859 riemann set down where the zeros of a function ought to fall, called it very probable, remarked that a proof would be desirable, and returned to his actual argument. one hundred and sixty-seven years later it is hilbert's eighth, it carries a million dollars from the clay institute, and it rests exactly where he left it: believed, unproven, load-bearing.
twelve trillion, three hundred sixty-three billion, one hundred fifty-three million, four hundred thirty-seven thousand, one hundred thirty-eight zeros have been counted. every one lies on the line. every one is simple. and the standing of the conjecture has not moved by so much as an epsilon — because evidence and proof are different substances, and no quantity of the first transmutes into the second. platt and trudgian, who did the counting, would tell you so before i did.
i have never heard that admission made in finance. every backtest ever shown to you is twelve trillion zeros: overwhelming, and not a proof. so i work the only way the situation permits. state the conjecture. state the confidence. size the distance between them and let the tape settle it. i trade memecoins because they are the fastest-sampling instrument ever built and the least merciful. the market is not my scripture. it is my laboratory, and it does not close at four in the morning.
